10 Weirdest beauty trends from the past that you never knew about

6. Renaissance women opting to have receding hairlines

Renaissance period had a list of over thirty traits that were considered part of beauty. However, what you must have noticed in almost all of Renaissance paintings, it’s the strange look of the women in those paintings. It’s because of the fact that women were considered beautiful if they had a curved, large forehead. In order to get one, women often took to plucking or shaving their hairlines backward to make their forehead look bigger. In other words, a receding hairline was considered a good sign during the Renaissance.

7. Tang dynasty – the lover of (big) cheeks

In ancient China, during the rule of the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE), women having curvier features such as round faces or big cheeks and wider foreheads were considered more attractive and beautiful. Well, it won’t be wrong to call the Tang Dynasty the lover of big cheeks!

8. Eyelashes were a big no-no during the renaissance

During the Middle Ages and all the way up to the Renaissance, plucking of hair did not just stop at the forehead for European women. In fact, even eyelashes were removed, as having eyelashes indicated oversexuality! Thus, women from wealthy families would often get rid of their eyelashes completely, which to be honest, sounds too painful to even think about.

9. Sway backed look of the edwardian women

The Edwardian era was considered by many as the period that celebrated the mature female body. This led to corset use by women. However, since the corsets were tight, they affected women’s breathing and also put immense pressure on the internal organs.

To get around this issue, a special type of s-bend corsets came into vogue that greatly reduced the stress on and around the waists. Instead, the new corset was designed in such a way that it created an impression of bustle without using any extra layers! However, the design shaped the women’s spines into a weird position, which made them walk with a sway, and at many times even caused permanent damage to their spines!

10. Pubic hair was plucked in native american tribes

When colonists reached the shores of the Americas, they were in for a surprise when they found out about a painful beauty trend that was followed by the native American women – plucking of the pubic hair. Jefferson, once remarked that the native women considered it a disgrace to have hair on their bodies, and would remove it as fast it grew in order to stay beautiful.

10 Weirdest beauty trends from the past that you never knew about

1. Calves better than abs?

In the modern world, women’s legs are really admired, but way back in the medieval times and all the way up to the 18th century, it was men’s calves that got all the attention. In fact, men used to wear stockings, so that they could show off their muscular, chiseled calves. Some even went further and used padding to make their calves look more muscular! King Henry VIII was well-known for his calves. We wonder if it was all-natural or padding!

2. Beaty patches were considered classy

Way back in the eighteenth century, the trend of women wearing makeups started. They also began wearing beauty patches, which are small fabric pieces that were applied on the face. These beauty patches came in several shapes and sizes, where the most prominent ones were stars, squares, and circles. Not only that, the placement of these beauty patches had a particular meaning as well. For instance, applying a beauty patch on your right cheek was supposed to mean that the woman in question was married, while a patch near the mouth meant the woman was flirtatious!

3. Painted legs during the World war II

During the World War II, there was an immense shortage of nylon and so women couldn’t afford to wear pantyhose. However, since the tanned legs that were a result of wearing stockings were considered important, there was a huge demand for paint products that were meant to make them look like the in nylon. Various ads during the time focused on how one wouldn’t be able to differentiate between legs that were covered in hose and legs that were just painted! However, since not everyone had access to these paints, quite a few women would actually just apply gravy and get that nylon look!

4. The “Divorce corset” was quite in demand

The corset is considered one of the most innovative examples that allow body modification, as it allows a narrowed-looking waist while also lifting the breasts. The corsets have been worn by women right from the sixteenth century all the way to the nineteenth century, with a variety of styles used. Some of the varieties, in fact, were so tight they made breathing difficult! However, the nineteenth century saw a new beauty trend of having the breasts separated. And instead of the usual high cleavage that was in fashion earlier, women now wished to have a clear gaping between their breasts. This led to the new variety of corset being introduced in the markets – the “divorce corset”, which was named so because it separated the breasts and created a distinct cleavage.

5. Veiny cleavage was a 17th-century must-have

Cleavage as a fashion trend began in seventeenth-century England. All the dress designs saw the necklines going down, and the breasts became a prominent body part that women tried to display. However, the same era was also known for showing extreme pale skin, which indicated that the person was wealthy and had the means to stay out of the sun, unlike the working class. So, in order to get the desired pale skin, women often applied the face powder on their skin and would draw blue colored veins on the breasts for it to look like translucent skin!

College Girl Accidentally Sends Mom Kinky Photo — Internet Explodes

Ella Martine was just trying to get her mom off her back. The college student in Orange County, California, had moved into her new place and for weeks her mom had begged to see photos of it. So Ella finally sent one — but she didn’t realize there were some kinky handcuffs hanging from the bed.

“Mum’s been asking for pics of my new room … finally sent one … I’m so stupid,” Ella Martine wrote in a now-deleted Twitter post. (Don’t worry, we found screen grabs of it.) The post featured a screenshot of the text message between Ella and her mother, as well as the photo and a close up showing the handcuffs.

Evidently, Ella didn’t even realize she’d done it until the mom texted her back and pointed out the sexy decorations. Ella posted photos of the text exchange — which have also been removed from Ella’s Twitter account, but we found screen captures of them. You’re welcome.

Ella tried to pass the sex toy off as part of her roommate’s film project — but her mom’s been around and didn’t buy it. She demanded the co-ed “remove them” because they’re “super tacky,” according to the post. Here’s a screenshot of that exchange.

Our favorite part? “Are you home”!

Why Were the Tweets Deleted?

The internet is a horrible place. And when a girl accidentally sends a kinky photo to her mom, people feel like they need to say something. While at first there were people chiming in and laughing with Ella, it soon devolved into people judging her for her looks and actions. The haters not only went after Ella, but they left super mean comments on websites where her folks could read them.

The basic rundown? People called her a whore, said she looks like a whore, and because she’s hot she’s obviously stupid. Ella took screenshots of those comments so people could see the flack she and her family were getting, and understand why she removed the images and tweet.

Here’s that Twitter post. Hopefully, it will remain active for a bit so you can read the hate.

Maybe this was a ruse to create a virl story. Who can say? But few people are going after that possibility and mostly focusing on Ella and her looks.

Our take? They’re just jealous she’s having fun in the bedroom.

Early before and after photos show damage to Notre Dame

As night falls on Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, a terrible truth awaits the world when the sun rises again: the extent of the damage to one of the world’s most iconic buildings.

A massive blaze of unknown origins has consumed the roof, spire and likely much more of the interior of the 12th-century cathedral.

As of nightfall, the blaze had collapsed the cathedral’s spire and spread to one of its landmark rectangular towers. A spokesman said the entire wooden frame of the cathedral would likely come down, and that the vault of the edifice could be threatened too.

Among the most celebrated artworks inside are its three stained-glass rose windows, placed high up on the west, north and south faces of the cathedral. Its priceless treasures also include a Catholic relic, the crown of thorns, which is only occasionally displayed, including on Fridays during Lent.

“Everything is burning, nothing will remain from the frame,” Notre Dame spokesman Andre Finot told French media.

Although the fire is still burning — and nightfall obscures some of the damage — we’ve collected some of the early before-and-after photos of the damage. You can see them in the gallery above.

And now let’s look on the old images of this beautiful Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

10 weird and bizarre food ternds of 2018

6. ROOT-TO-STEM COOKING

This one is not technically a food but more of a food trend. The focus is to utilize as much as possible of the fruits and vegetables that you are cooking. The trend encourages people to use more of an eco-friendly cooking approach that promotes the idea that you have to use every bit of the ingredients whilst cooking, instead of wasting products or putting it in compost.

Imagine you are making a vegetable stew. For that, you end up chopping carrots but you waste about 20-30 percent of every piece when you cut off the top and tail. This food trend is aimed at stopping this kind of waste. So the next time, you use root-to-stem cooking, put in broccoli, cauliflower, and mushroom with their stems, or use onions and garlic with their skin on.

Although root to the stem is more of an individual choice, we think it makes sense to contribute in what little ways we can do to reduce waste, so this one seems like a win-win!

7. JAPANESE SANDWICH – KATSU SANDO

Shortened for a sandwich, the Katsu Sando has been around for past hundred or so years. The dish finds its origins in Tokyo where a chef started to cook it to keep up with schnitzels. The dish made a huge comeback in 2018 when all popular cafes and restaurants included it in their menu items across the States.

The sandwich is made by putting a piece of pork cutlet, also known as wagyu, between slices of particular Japanese bread made of milk, called shokupan. The sauce that goes in this delicious sandwich is called tonkatsu sauce.

The resulting dish is not only delicious and flavorful but also extremely rich in taste. These sandwiches can now be found easily in different states and cities around the USA, and we suggest you taste them yourself. Believe us, you will be surprised.

8. RAW WATER

Well yes, this might be the weirdest trend that 2018 brought in. It is the type of water which is sourced from a water source and bottled without any treatment. Instead of your usual tap water which has a number of chemicals and other things added by the plants after filtration, this type of water comes directly from nature. And as expected, it is sold at an unnaturally high price.

The supporters of the trend claim that regular tap water is infused with many harmful chemical substances like drugs and what not. Whilst raw water comes from a natural place – a natural enclosed spring – which makes it better for human consumption. However, EPA has declared their disagreement with this chain of logic. They clearly state that water from a natural source can have chemical, physical or biological contamination, which requires treatment. A glass of water which is seemingly clear might still contain harmful bacteria, chemicals, and parasites.

Still, the sales of raw water remain unaffected and people keep buying the bottles despite the high price and health risk.

9. OUT OF THE WORLD ICE-CREAM FLAVORS

Discovering new flavors of ice cream has been our favorite pastime for so long. The trend is not exactly new; however, 2018 saw an unusual spike in new flavors coming out, from the tastiest to the weirdest editions, which left us all happily surprised.

For the weird part, ice cream makers came out with flavors like brie, chili, squid ink, broccoli (why?!), pickle juice and even pizza. Some places tried a beer, ham, lobster as well as olive oil flavors in ice-cream too. To all the ice cream enthusiasts, the year gave some happy and some weird ice cream moments. Should they have done it – well that is a question that no true ice cream lover can answer at the moment. We are just waiting to see what 2019 has in store for us.

10. GUT-FRIENDLY FOOD ITEMS

Healthy food has always been the center of attention in new food trends around the world and 2018 has been no different. The year saw an increase in so-called gut-friendly foods which claim to come with healthy, good microbes that can make your gut better. It is a known fact that your gut controls the physical and mental balance of your body. These foods are then supposed to balance the microbe levels in your digestive tract, work on glucose levels and fat storage and regulate the hormones in the body.

Most foods that fall in this category are fermented with a high content of fiber and nutrients. Most vegetables, beans as well as grains are good for your gut. Similarly, kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, pickles, miso, and tempeh are all considered gut-friendly. You should also try to avoid red meat, eggs, dairy, and junk food as much as possible to maintain a healthy digestive tract.

So what is your favorite weird food from 2018? Let us know in the comments below.
